Context:
Venezuela has been facing the harshest socio-economic crisis of its history.
In the last 4 years, this South American country has been caught in a downward spiral of hyperinflation, power cuts, shortages of food and medicine. This has led to growing political discontent, resulting in population unrest, the spread violence and massive emigration from the country.
About four million Venezuelans have left the country in recent years, most of them – due to their precarious conditions – literally walked thousands of kilometers to neighbor countries. Among these families, many of the teaching and administrative personnel of Lasallian Schools have also left to escape insecurity and poverty in search of a better future for them and their children. One of our schools in the city of Valencia lost between 30 to 40 staff members in a year.
Despite this dramatic situation, Lasallians are still there,
but they need our help!
We need to join efforts and support them while they are struggling to ensure the right to quality education for the students in their care!
The initiative:
Student attendance in schools has drastically diminished. Due to currency and food shortages, many Venezuelans only eat one meal per day. Parents find themselves in a position where they prefer to let their children sleep during the morning so that they feel less hunger. There is no money and there is no food available for breakfast in many households. This situation is having a terrible impact not only on students’ academic performance but also on their development of critical life skills.
This is why Lasallians have decided
to take action!
Your help will contribute to providing the school daily lunch (from Monday to Friday) for 2,780 students attending La Salle Baloche, La Salle los Taladros and La Salle Hno. Juan.
These schools have been selected because they have school canteens which can provide the lunch program and they serve low-income families from working-class areas.
With $498.97 USD per day, we can provide a nutritious meal to all their 2780 students.
To ensure the right nutritional intake for all students for a whole trimester (October-December) the total amount required is: 27.443,35 USD.
